Severe Hemorrhoids

A hemorrhoid is a type of ailment wherein the veins, usually located in or around the rectum or anus, become swollen due to excessive pressure applied on them. The common factors that contribute to the risk of having a hemorrhoid include constipation, obesity, and pregnancy. In addition, this ailment can become more severe under certain circumstances.

The main cause of severe hemorrhoids is neglect. Oftentimes, the symptoms of hemorrhoids can become so subtle that most individuals, thinking that such pain and itching are normal, may disregard them. Once this ailment is not given early attention, its symptoms can become more noticeable and it will become harder to cure. In addition, waiting for the hemorrhoid to clear up by itself without using any type of treatment or without performing hygienic practices can also worsen the severity of the ailment.

Furthermore, severe hemorrhoids are rarely treated by medicated creams and gels, although these products may provide temporary relief from the pain and itchiness. Generally, severe hemorrhoids are treated through medical procedures. One example of these treatments is rubber ligation wherein the hemorrhoids are tied using a tiny piece of rubber band. Another technique is known as coagulation therapy, a nonsurgical procedure in which the tissues surrounding the hemorrhoid are scarred to clot the circulation of blood within the vessel. The third type of treatment involves the injection of chemicals in the affected area to improve the swelling and quicken the reduction of the swollen veins. If one or more of these procedures were tried but the ailment remains persistent, the final solution would be to surgically remove the swollen vein. This surgery is known as hemorrhoidectomy and is the one that involves the most amount of pain.
